NEW YORK– Pfizer Inc. is to add to the $6 billion in sales of its new generic drug Celecoxib to the country’s top drug maker. In addition to its branded version of Celebrex, Pfizer’s drug, in late March, the company will add to its $1.8 billion in sales of its painkiller Vioxx. In late March, the drug was approved by the FDA for the treatment of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions in the body. (Photo: Getty Images)
Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to reduce pain and swelling in the body. It works by blocking a substance called prostaglandin that leads to the production of a hormone called prostanoids. Celecoxib is used to treat pain and swelling caused by arthritis and other conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and lupus. It is used to treat menstrual cramps and joint pain caused by sprains, strains, and sports injuries. Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that also works by inhibiting the production of a hormone called prostaglandin. The drug is also used to reduce arthritis symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

A new study shows that the painkiller Celebrex can reduce heart attack and stroke-related deaths.
The study, led by researchers in Denmark, found that Celebrex (celecoxib) reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke by 44%, compared with placebo. This reduction was especially significant for people with a history of heart attack or stroke, with heart attacks and strokes accounting for 31% of all heart attacks and stroke deaths in Denmark.
The researchers said that although Celebrex’s anti-inflammatory properties may slow the development of new heart attacks or strokes, it does not lower the risk of heart attacks or strokes by as much as other medicines.
The study was funded by the drugmaker Pfizer, a major player in the market for painkillers. The company also made Celebrex available to doctors for free in the UK, but it is not expected to be given to patients.
The Celebrex study is the first to show that the anti-inflammatory drug, called COX-2 selective COX-2 inhibitors, can reduce heart attack and stroke deaths, according to Dr Mark H. Taylor, a doctor at University College London.
However, a study published in the Journal of Cardiology found that the drug did not reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes in people with known heart disease.
The study is the first to show that the anti-inflammatory drug Celebrex can reduce heart attack or stroke deaths, as well as heart attacks and strokes.
“These findings may help to identify patients and reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes, so that more people are able to use the medication safely and effectively,” said Dr Taylor.
The COX-2 selective COX-2 inhibitors Celebrex and Vioxx, developed by Pfizer, contain an anti-inflammatory agent called cyclo-oxygenase (COX) 2. COX-2 inhibitors work by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, chemicals that cause inflammation and pain. Research has found that a small number of people with cardiovascular disease, have the potential to develop a heart attack or stroke.
Researchers from the University of Gothenburg analyzed the combined records of all people who had taken the drugs at baseline and 2 years after they stopped taking them and found that only 33% of the people who took the drugs had a heart attack or stroke, while only 8% had a heart attack or stroke.
The study was led by Dr H. M. A. Rheingold, a University of Gothenburg Professor of Medicine at the University of Gothenburg and his colleagues said that while the results of the study did not show a significant reduction in heart attack or stroke deaths, they did show that the drug does increase the risk of these cardiovascular events.
“The finding that the drug increased the risk of a heart attack and stroke death was consistent across both treatment groups. These findings are important to consider for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, especially if they have a history of heart attack or stroke, and to help prevent the development of these heart attacks or strokes,” Dr Taylor said.
The Celebrex study is the first to show that the anti-inflammatory drug, called COX-2 selective COX-2 inhibitors, can reduce heart attack and stroke deaths, as well as heart attacks and strokes.
It is also likely that Celebrex, the drugmaker Pfizer’s main rival to Celebrex, will also reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke deaths by 44%.
Dr Taylor said that while the researchers found that Celebrex was not significantly associated with heart attack or stroke deaths, the finding did show that the drug did increase the risk of heart attack and stroke deaths, in line with the findings of a previous study in the journal Lancet.
“We believe that the findings of the study show that the anti-inflammatory drug, called COX-2 selective COX-2 inhibitors, is safe and well-tolerated in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease and is not associated with a significant increased risk of these cardiovascular events,” said Dr Taylor.

Celebrex is an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever that contains 200 mg of celecoxib. It is used to relieve pain, inflammation, and swelling (edema) caused by various medical conditions. It relieves pain caused by arthritis, muscle aches, strains, and sprains as well as minor injuries. Celebrex is available in a variety of forms, including tablets, capsules, and oral suspensions.
Celebrex is a prescription medication that is used to treat the symptoms of certain types of cancer, including breast cancer. It works by reducing the amount of chemicals called cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes that produce pain signals.
Celebrex 200 mg tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Do not chew or crush the tablets. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
The dosage of Celebrex may vary depending on the severity of your pain and the condition being treated. It is important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the manufacturer’s label for the best results.
Celebrex is available in dosage of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. The 5 mg dosage is the lowest dose of Celebrex for the shortest period of time needed by patients. The 20 mg dosage is the lowest dose of Celebrex.
Celebrex capsules should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the capsules. Doing so can increase the risk of stomach upset and can increase the risk of developing stomach ulcers. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water.
Celebrex capsules are available in dosage of 2.5, 5, and 10 mg. The 5 mg is the lowest dose of Celebrex for patients with severe pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. The 10 mg is the lowest dose of Celebrex available in the U. S. and is the most commonly prescribed dosage.
Like any prescription medication, Celebrex can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Common side effects include:
If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking Celebrex and seek medical help right away. These side effects can be permanent and can be a sign of a more serious condition.
